About First Sunday. First Sunday is a monthly worship service targeting persons interested in the Twelve Step “recovery” movement that originated with Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and now spans a variety of programs for addictive and relationship disorders. Each First Sunday service focuses on one of the Twelve Steps, and all include celebration of Holy Communion.
Epworth United Methodist Church of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware designed First Sunday as a hybrid of Twelve Step and Christian traditions. The service has been offered for several years and has a loyal following, with a regular attendance of approximately thirty-five persons in this Atlantic resort community. The purpose of First Sunday is to encourage—not to replace—both Twelve Step meetings and regular Sunday worship. Click here to download a summary of our First Sunday Worship Service.
Times. Epworth’s First Sunday service is offered at 6:30 p.m. on the First Sunday of every month.
Sacraments. Our worship in each First Sunday service includes sharing of Holy Communion. The elements we use are wheat bread and unfermented grape juice. All are welcome to First Sunday services, and to share in the sacrament of Holy Communion.
